While the Irish National Rally Championship has been a single entity since 1978, it was preceded by an amalgamation of navigation and rally events that began in the 1965/66 season. However, both now have their own separate championships.
Cork’s Mick O’Connell was the first champion of the new era in 1978 and is amongst thirty drivers that have won the series. Monaghan’s Niall Maguire and Donegal’s Declan Boyle are currently the only triple winners of the series.Triton Showers have underpinned the Irish National Rally Championship since 2015 when Donegal’s Donagh Kelly won the Vard Memorial Trophy. Clonmel’s Roy White, Monaghan’s Sam Moffett and Donegal’s Declan Boyle have also won the series under the Triton banner.
So, will Triton’s fifth season continue that remarkable record and have yet another different champion - currently, Monaghan’s Josh Moffett leads the way after the opening rounds in Abbeyleix and Longford. This year’s series consists of eight rounds with the best seven events to count. The remaining rounds are in Monaghan, Limerick, Dungarvan, Sligo, Gort and Bantry.The series also incorporates the Mk. 2 Trophy Champions, the Motorsport Safety Team Group N award, a Group R award, rally.ie award (top two-wheel drive in overall standings), Historic and Junior championsips.
